La iglesia del juramento de San Rafael en Córdoba (1796-1806)

Abstract

La iglesia del Juramento está dedicada al Arcángel San Rafael, patrono de Córdoba. La devoción y el culto tienen sus orígenes hacia el siglo XII, tras la primera aparición del Arcángel en el año 1274 —cuando la ciudad sufría una gran epidemia de peste— al Comendador del Convento de la Merced, Fray Simón de Sousa; que transmite al obispo Don Pascual, de parte del Arcángel, el siguiente mensaje: «ponga su imagen en lo alto de la torre de la iglesia catedral y exhorte a todos los feligreses a que me sean devotos y celebre fiesta todos los años; que si así se hace, este contagio cesará . El 7 de mayo de 1578 se aparece el Arcángel al Padre Andrés de las Roelas y «le juró por Jesucristo, que era el guarda y custodia de la ciudad» En torno a estas apariciones se consolida el culto a San Rafael.
