This paper analyses the figure of the “dictador”, “the only mythological character that Latin America has produced”, as García Márquez points out. It compares three very different figures through their linguistic features. In Valle-Inclán's “Tirano Banderas”, it is clear who Santos Banderas is and what he is like from the outset. Roa Bastos portrays his “Supreme Being” moving from the assertion of “YO EL SUPREMO” to a totally humiliated non-being. García Márquez gradually reveals, restrospectively, the “he” referred to solely by the personal pronoun. If novels about dictators can be considered a genre, then the figure of the “dictador” is rendered in an extremely complex way.
