El silencio del símbolo poético. Sobre el drama calderoniano "La torre", de Hugo von Hofmannsthal

Abstract

La desesperación es el tema de la segunda versión de "La Torre"; esta trata la renuncia a la utopía del símbolo poético como unión de lo perceptible y de lo supraperceptible y el silencio, que resulta cuando el príncipe Segismundo es condenado. Esta es la respuesta definitiva a las preguntas sobre la legitimidad de la poesía y de la función mediadora del poeta (una respuesta que tiene el apoyo de la obra sobre el drama barroco alemán de Walter Benjamin) que plasmó Hofmannsthal desde la crisis lingüística y existencial de Lord Chandos.

Despair has the last word in the second version of “The Tower”; that is, the relinquishment of the utopian ideal of the poetic symbol as uniting the perceptible and the supraperceptible and the resulting silence to which Prince Segismundo is condemned. This is the definitive reply to the questions about the legitimacy of poetry and the mediating function of the poet (a reply supported by Walter Benjamin's piece on German baroque drama) which plagued Hofmannsthal from the time of Lord Chandos linguistic and existential crisis.
