Funciones ejecutivas en niños y adolescentes en acogimiento residencial con medidas de protección

Abstract

OBJETIVOS: Esta Tesis Doctoral analiza las funciones ejecutivas en niños y adolescentes en situación de acogimiento residencial. La presencia de diferencias significativas en el funcionamiento ejecutivo se explora atendiendo a variables como la edad, el tiempo de institucionalización y la tipología de maltrato infantil. MÉTODO: La muestra de la investigación está compuesta por un total de 73 menores (niños y adolescentes), con edades comprendidas entre 7 y 16 años y residen en centros de acogida de menores de titularidad pública de la Comunidad Autónoma de Extremadura. La causa del acogimiento residencial puede deberse a la vivencia de malos tratos o a otra medida de protección. A todos los participantes de la investigación se les aplicaron diferentes pruebas neuropsicológicas estandarizadas que cumplen debidamente los criterios de fiabilidad y validez requeridos: Test de cinco dígitos (FDT), Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome in Children (BADS-C) y la Escala de inteligencia Wechsler para niños (WISC-5). RESULTADOS: La evaluación neuropsicológica muestra que estos niños y adolescentes presentan dificultades en sus funciones ejecutivas. Muestran rigidez mental, escasa capacidad para enfrentar el estrés cognitivo y también, problemas para controlar su capacidad de atención y la velocidad con la que pueden procesar la información. CONCLUSIONES: Esta Tesis Doctoral pretende contribuir al conocimiento del funcionamiento de este grupo y más concretamente, a la identificación y atención a las posibles alteraciones, dificultades y/o carencias presentes en estos menores, con la finalidad de responder de manera efectiva a sus necesidades.

OBJECTIVES: This Thesis analyses the executive functions in children and adolescents in residential care. The presence of significant differences in the executive functioning is explored, while taking into account such variables as gender, age and time spent in residential care. METHOD: The research sample is made up of 73 minors, both children and teenagers, aged between 7 and 16 years old and residing in public care centers in the region of Extremadura. The reason for foster placement may be abuse or the implementation of any other protection measure. The population participating in this research have undergone standardised neuropsychological tests that meet the required reliability and validity criteria, i.e. The Five Digits Test (FDT), The Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome in Children (BADS-C), and the The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-5). RESULTS: The neuropsychological evaluation shows that these children and adolescents have difficulties in their executive functions. They show mental rigidity, scarce ability to face cognitive stress and also have problems in controlling their attention span and the speed with which they can process information. CONCLUSIONS: This Thesis seeks to contribute to the knowledge of this group of individuals and, more specifically, to the identification of their potential alterations, difficulties, lacks and needs.
