Adaptaciones de un motivo literario: la salamandra

Abstract

Este estudio traza las diversas modulaciones que experimenta el tema de la salamandra en nuestra tradición, adaptándose en el tiempo a diferentes temas y contextos, acreditados por los testimonios, tanto en prosa como en poesía. Desde la Antigüedad clásica, este anfibio, asociado con el fuego, se ha dotado de características antropomórficas cambiantes y adaptarse a temas paganos, asuntos religiosos, filosóficos o emblemáticos. El amor platónico en la poesía y, sobre todo, su origen petrarquista, hace uso de la antinomia del símbolo frío/calor para dar cabida a la dialéctica de los amantes. Del mismo modo, parece posible formular un enlace con el misticismo y la bíblica llama incombustible, establecido a través de las similitudes entre ambos motivos. Por medio de la transmisión, la vitalidad del símbolo se corroboró de nuevo en el Siglo XX, cuando este tema se revitaliza.

This study attempts to trace the various modulations undergone by the literary motif of the salamander throughout tradition, adapting itself in time to different themes and contexts, accredited by testimonies both in prose and poetry. From classical antiquity, this amphibian, associated with fire, has been endowed with anthropomorphic features which changed and adapted to pagan, religious, philosophic or emblematic matters. Love poetry of platonic and, above all, Petrarchan lineage makes use of the antynomy of the symbol warm/cold to accomodate it to the dialectic of lovers. Likewise, it seems possible to formulate a link with mysticism and the incombustible Biblical flame, established through the similarities between both motifs. By means of transmission, the vitality of the symbol is again corroborated in the 20th century, when the figure is revitalized.
