FHC errou? A economia da escravidaõ no Brasil meridional

Abstract

Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1977) afirma que la esclavitud y la exclusión política de las élites gauchas provocaron la decadencia de la producción de carne seca de Rio Grande do Sul durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Este artículo critica ese punto de vista y ofrece una explicación alternativa. Utilizando el enfoque "Economía de la esclavitud" (Conrad y Meyer, 1958), afirma que la esclavitud fue eficiente y que las dificultades del sector fueron, en realidad, un síntoma de la Dutch Disease (Corden, 1984).

Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1977) claims thats slavery and the political exclusion of the gaucho elites caused the decadence of the dry beef production of Rio Grande do Sul during the second half of the XIX century. This paper criticizes that view and offers an alternative explanation. Using the "Economics of Slavery" (Conrad and Meyer, 1958) approach, it asserts that slavery was efficient and the difficulties of the sector were, actually, a symptom of the Dutch Disease (Corden, 1984).
