This paper presents the results of an investigation that was designed to determine the extent to which new students entering the University of Sonora, handle the concepts of critical thinking. For the design, we depart from the theoretical model proposed by Paul and Elder (2006a,b). Those researchers mention three nuclear aspects to improve thinking skills in humans: elements of thought, evaluation standards and intellectual virtues. This work is characterized by trying to find out about one of the elements of thought: the management of concepts. Specifically, the skills that students have for defining concepts. The sample consists of 200 students in the course strategies for learning to learn, during the semester 2011-12, at the University of Sonora, Mexico. The results indicate that there are serious deficiencies that must be overcome if we want students to develop the potential of critical and creative thinking they own.
