Temas y funciones de los sueños-visiones en el género hagiográfico de la "Passio"

Abstract

En este artículo se estudia los temas y funciones de los sueños-visiones del género hagiográfico en la "Passio"; para ser más precisos, en dieciséis pasiones que van de los siglos II al X d. C. Dos temas básicos emergen: los temas del martirio y del Cielo. Esto es consecuencia de la preocupación constante de los cristianos en el proceso del martirio: sufrimiento y, consecuentemente, cercanía a la muerte. Como recompensa, el ingreso en el Cielo esperado. Por otra parte, la función de estos sueños es ayudar al cristiano ante el martirio inminente; apoyo al propio mártir (ayuda física y psicológica) y otras (intercesión y consolación).

This article studies the themes and functions of the visionary dreams of the hagiographic genre in the “Passio”; to be precise, in sixteen passions ranging from the second to the tenth centuries A.D. Two basic themes emerge: the themes of martyrdom and of Heaven. This is a result of the constant concern of Christians with the process of martyrdom: suffering, closeness to death, and so on. As a reward, admission to Heaven awaits. Furthermore, the function of these dreams is to help the Christian with imminent martyrdom; to aid the martyr himself (physical and psychological support) and others (intercession and consolation).
