Arquitectura de los conventos franciscanos observantes de la diócesis de Coria y Plasencia en la provincia de Cáceres (siglos XVI-XVIII)

Abstract

El libro acomete el primer estudio sobre la arquitectura de las ordenes monásticas en la región extremeña y se centra en los conventos masculinos de los franciscanos observantes, rama que dirige toda la orden desde 1517. Incluye una descripción pormenorizada de cada una de las estancias de estos inmuebles, durante el Antiguo Régimen, momento en que su presencia se convierte en el más importante componente de la vida religiosa regular en la región, con gran repercusión en el plano urbano y periurbano. Objetivo importante fue extraer la nómina de artífices y mecenas que alzaron tales edificios, así como el modo de organizarlos. Resulta de ello una arquitectura que aglutina formas populares y cultas. Todo lo cual ayudará a comprender y recuperar parte de este ingente y valioso patrimonio que se ha visto afectado por la desamortización y los nuevos usos. Para lograrlo fue preciso consultar todo tipo de fuentes en archivos y bibliotecas, entes públicos y privados, tanto nacionales como extranjeros. Acompañan, además, numerosas fotografía y planos de los edificios.

This book is the first study of the architecture of the monastic orders in the region of Extremadura and focuses on the male convents of the Observant Franciscans, the branch that has led the entire order since 1517. It includes a detailed description of each of the rooms in these buildings during the Ancien Régime, a time when their presence became the most important component of regular religious life in the region, with great repercussions on urban and peri-urban life. An important objective was to extract the list of architects and patrons who erected these buildings, as well as the way in which they were organised. The result is an architecture that brings together popular and cultured forms. All of which will help to understand and recover part of this enormous and valuable heritage that has been affected by disentailment and new uses. To achieve this, it was necessary to consult all kinds of sources in archives and libraries, public and private bodies, both national and foreign. Numerous photographs and plans of the buildings are also included.
