La ganadería española en la Edad Moderna. Apuntes para su estudio

Abstract

La intención de este trabajo, pretende encauzarse en las siguientes direcciones: precisar la terminología al uso para discernir las clases de ganados existentes en la Edad Moderna y las razones de las diferencias entre unos y otros, acudiendo en unos casos a los tratadistas y en otros a la normativa jurídica; ofrecer unas cifras aproximadas del número de cabezas que integraban las diferentes cabañas; resumir el papel de la Mesta y los ganados que se movían bajo su protección; determinar las pautas de comportamiento y la operatividad de los mercados relacionados con las actividades pecuarias y, finalmente, concretar el apoyo legislativo que a los ganaderos dispensó la monarquía para garantizarles el usufructo del nervio principal que sustentaba su industria, los pastizales.

The intention of this work is to focus on the following directions: to specify the terminology used to distinguish the types of livestock existing in the Modern Age and the reasons for the differences between them, in some cases by referring to treatises and in others to legal regulations; to offer approximate figures for the number of heads of cattle that made up the different herds; to summarise the role of the Mesta and the livestock that moved under its protection; to determine the patterns of behaviour and the operation of the markets related to livestock activities and, finally, to specify the legislative support that the monarchy gave to livestock farmers in order to guarantee them the usufruct of the main nerve that sustained their industry, the pastureland.
