El humanismo en la Nueva España de Lorenzo Lebrón de Quiñones

Abstract

Desde una perspectiva histórica, el término «humanismo» sigue siendo el más adecuado para referirnos a ese peculiar movimiento intelectual que sacudió Europa desde el siglo XIV y que culminó en el XVI. Ese movimiento es el llamado «Humanismo» propiamente dicho o «humanismo renacentista». El Humanismo, así delimitado y definido, no podía permanecer ajeno e insensible frente al Nuevo Mundo. Lorenzo Lebrón de Quiñones (un extremeño más), fue muy probablemente un hombre cercano al talante y pensamiento humanistas; que ejerció el oficio de oidor, como defensor del Derecho, no dudando en denunciar los cargos, excesos y malos tratamientos hechos a los naturales.

From a historical perspective, the term "humanism" is still the most appropriate to refer to that peculiar intellectual movement that shook Europe from the 14th century and culminated in the 16th century. This movement is the so-called "Humanism" proper or "Renaissance humanism". Humanism, thus delimited and defined, could not remain alien and insensitive to the New World. Lorenzo Lebrón de Quiñones (another Extremaduran), was very probably a man close to the humanist spirit and thinking, who exercised the office of ombudsman, as a defender of the Law, not hesitating to denounce the charges, excesses and ill-treatment of the natives.
