Francisco Barranco y Jusepe Martínez, dos discípulos del pintor conquense Cristóbal García Salmerón

Abstract

Cristóbal García Salmerón fue el pintor más destacado de su Cuenca natal durante buena parte del siglo XVII, siendo considerado por los pocos pero destacados autores que lo nombran en sus estudios como un artista notable en vista de las obras que de él se conservan. Por ello, no es difícil imaginar que a su taller llegaron numerosos discípulos con el objetivo de aprender el oficio de pintar junto al maestro. Así, tras haber consultado la totalidad de documentos existentes en el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Cuenca, se han hallado las cartas de aprendizaje de Francisco Barranco y Jusepe Martínez, pudiendo haberse convertido el primero en un genio de las naturalezas muertas, mientras el segundo ha quedado relegado al más absoluto de los olvidos.

Cristóbal García Salmerón was the foremost painter in his native Cuenca for much of the 17th century, and is considered by the few but prominent authors who mention him in their studies to be a notable artist seeing the works created by him that have survived. Therefore, it is not difficult to imagine that many of his disciples came to his studio to learn the craft of painting with the master. Thus, after consulting all the existing documents in the Provincial Historical Archive of Cuenca, the apprenticeship letters of Francisco Barranco and Jusepe Martínez have been found. The former may have become a genius of still lifes, while the latter has been relegated to the most absolute oblivion.
