Penélope/Helena en el teatro español de posguerra

Abstract

Si tenemos en cuenta los modelos de mujer que aparecen en la literatura griega, hay uno que destaca por sus buenas virtudes: Penélope. La discreta y prudente esposa de Ulises, que espero su regreso durante veinte largos años. En la antigüedad, frente a este comportamiento ejemplar de paciencia y fidelidad durante la ausencia del marido, se opuso el de Clitemnestra, mujer de Agamenón, rey de Micenas, que durante la guerra de Troya tomó como compañero a Egisto y asesinó a su marido de vuelta a casa. Sin embargo, en la literatura occidental, y en este caso en el teatro español de posguerra, cuando se recrea sobre escena el mito de Penélope, los autores oponen este comportamiento no al de Clitemnestra, sino al de Helena, prima de la de Ítaca y hermana de la de Argos (o Micenas).

If we consider the models of women who appear in Greek literature, there is one who stands out for her good virtues: Penelope. The discreet and prudent wife of Odysseus, who waited for his return for twenty long years. In antiquity, this exemplary behaviour of patience and fidelity during her husband's absence was contrasted with that of Clytemnestra, wife of Agamemnon, King of Mycenae, who took Aegisthus as her companion during the Trojan War and murdered her husband on his return home. However, in Western literature, and in this case in post-war Spanish theatre, when the myth of Penelope is recreated on stage, the authors oppose this behaviour not to that of Clytemnestra, but to that of Helen, cousin of Ithaca and sister of Argos (or Mycenae).
