Las traducciones de manuales de química franceses en el último tercio del siglo XVIII en España

Abstract

A finales del siglo XVIII se tradujeron al castellano un considerable número de obras de química originalmente escritas en francés. Este trabajo ofrece una revisión general de las obras y un retrato colectivo de los traductores. Se analizarán las diversas opciones adoptadas para acomodar las voces francesas al castellano y las principales modificaciones introducidas en el texto original. Se trata de un período especialmente interesante debido a la reforma tem1inológica de la nomenclatura química que se introdujo en 1787. El estudio ayudará a conocer los rasgos biográficos de los traductores y sus motivaciones, así como sus diversas perspectivas en materias relacionadas con la traducción. También se pretende recalcar la importancia de las obras de ciencia en la historia general de la traducción.

A large number of chemical books were translated from French into Spanish language in late eighteenth centmy. This paper offers a general overview of these translations. Il provides a collective portrail of the translators and their work by paying atlention to the substantial arnendments introduced in the origmal texts and the different options concerning the adaptation of French words rnto Spanish language. The studied period is specially interesting and complex duelo the refonn of chemical nomenclature which took place in 1787. The discussion unveils general biographical features ofthe translators and their broad range of interests and perspectives. The study highlights the imp01tance of scientific texts in a general History of translation.
