Arias Montano, entre la cruz y la pluma

Abstract

La Retórica de Montano tiene el esqueleto de las Retóricas profanas del siglo XVI: trata de los mismos temas que tratan las Retóricas profanas. Ahora bien, ese esqueleto esta relleno de un contenido que ya no se parece tanto al de las Retóricas profanas; se trata, como hemos tenido ocasión de ver a lo largo de todo este trabajo, de un contenido propio de un hombre metido en los problemas que tiene planteada la Iglesia católica europea, liderada en estos momentos por el monarca español, a lo largo de la Europa del Siglo XVI son dos los problemas fundamentales que tiene planteados la Iglesia del momento en lo que a oratoria se refiere: por un lado, la conducta moral y los conocimientos de los clérigos y oradores sagrados; y, por otro, el problema del protestantismo liderado por Lutero.

Montano's Rhetoric has the same skeleton as the profane rhetorics of the 16th century: it deals with the same themes as the profane rhetorics. However, this skeleton is filled with a content that no longer resembles that of the profane Rhetoric; it is, as we have had occasion to see throughout this work, the content of a man involved in the problems posed by the European Catholic Church, led at this time by the Spanish monarch, throughout 16th century Europe, there are two fundamental problems facing the Church of the time as far as oratory is concerned: on the one hand, the moral conduct and knowledge of clerics and sacred orators; and, on the other, the problem of Protestantism led by Luther.
