Some characteristics of Baroja's language are analysed in this article. According to some critics his prose is full of errors but, according to others, these errors are justified because of the connexion of his prose with the spoken language. After going over several expressions (such as article + proper name, the “consecutio temporum”, the use of prepositions and passive verbs with “se” followed by agent...) it can be observed that some structures may be due to the influence of the spoken language, but this is not so with others. There are clear syntactic mistakes and there are certain peculiarities which are not exactly incorrect, but which are seldom used in the Spanish language.
