Estudio documental de los símbolos indígenas en el Templo menor del exconvento dominico del siglo XVI de Santiago Apostol, Cuilapan (Oaxaca, México)

Abstract

El objetivo del presente trabajo es determinar si existió sincretismo religioso oculto entre las piedras, arquitectura, decorados y pinturas existentes en el exconvento dominico del siglo XVI de Santiago Apóstol, Cuilapan ubicado en los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca. Este exconvento conserva características de, al menos, tres culturas: la mixteca, la zapoteca y la náhuatl. El análisis que se hará será de las imágenes y los símbolos de los siglos XVI y XVII que todavía es posible observar en el Templo menor y lugares anexos.

A través de este estudio será posible determinar cuánto del pensamiento cosmogónico indígena descansa oculto en los vestigios físicos de la Conquista Espiritual en Cuilapan.

El presente trabajo responde estas preguntas para determinar la existencia y naturaleza de un sincretismo religioso entre las ideas del cristianismo y de las culturas indígenas y, a su vez, rescata en un archivo digital las imágenes de los signos indígenas y españoles presentes en el Templo menor del exconvento dominico del siglo XVI de Santiago Apóstol, Cuilapan en la región: Valles Centrales de Oaxaca para proteger su memoria en caso de destrucción por agentes naturales pues este edificio fue catalogado por la UNESCO como parte del Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.

The objective of the present study is to determine whether there was a hidden religious’ syncretism between stones, architecture, decorations and paintings in the former Dominican convent of the XVI century of Santiago Apostle, Cuilapan located in the region: Central Valleys of Oaxaca. This former convent preserves characteristics of, at least, three cultures: the Mixtec, the Zapotec and the Nahuatl. The analysis that will be done will be about images and symbols of the 16th and 17th centuries that is still be possible to observe at the Minor Temple and annexes places.

Through this study it will be possible to determine how much indigenous cosmogonic thought lies hidden in those physical vestiges of the Spiritual Conquest in Cuilapan.

This paper answers these questions to determine the existence and nature of a religious syncretism between the ideas of Christianity and indigenous cultures and, at the same time, rescues in a digital archive images of the Indigenous and Spanish signs present in the Minor Temple of the Dominican ex-convent of the XVI century of Santiago Apostle, Cuilapan in the region: Central Valleys of Oaxaca to protect his memory in the event of destruction by natural agents as this building was listed by UNESCO as part of the Cultural heritage of humanity.
