La tuberculosis en Almendralejo en el siglo XIX

Abstract

La tuberculosis, verdadero azote de la humanidad durante siglos, es el gran padecimiento del siglo XIX. La mortalidad por tuberculosis ha estado siempre muy influida por una serie de condicionantes socioeconómicos, industriales e higiénicos. Transmitida principalmente por vía aérea, el contacto íntimo y mantenido, el hacinamiento en habitaciones mal ventiladas, la deficiente alimentación y la vida miserable de buena parte de la población local, fueron el Jactor fundamentalen la alta mortalidad de esta enfermedad infecciosa. La fácil difusión del bacilo tuberculoso, el Mycobacterium, hacen de la tuberculosis el prototipo de infección crónica, que incidió de manera cruel entre los adultos jóvenes de Almendralejo, que antes de la introducción de la terapéutica antimicrobiana tenía un carácter netamente mortal.
