Los hospitales de Jérez de los Caballeros (Badajoz) en el siglo XIX

Abstract

En el siglo XIX, el Hospital de Enfermos de Jerez de los Caballeros era un edificio de cortas dimensiones e inadecuado para sus funciones, situado en la calle homónima, dentro del barrio de San Bartolomé, pero perteneciente a San Miguel. Se ignora la fecha exacta de su fundación, creyéndose que ya existía en el siglo XV. Al fundarse el Convento de la Gracia existía el Hospital de San Bartolomé, que quizás fuese el conocido en el siglo XIX como de Transeúntes; el denominarlo de San Bartolomé pudo ser para diferenciarlo del de San Miguel, que podría existir en esa época. Esta duda sobre la existencia de uno o dos hospitales en la localidad, y su exacta denominación y localización, estará presente a lo largo de toda la centuria, con arreglo a la documentación consultada.

In the nineteenth century, the Hospital for Sick in Jerez de los Caballeros, was a building of short dimensions and unsuitable for their duties, situated in the homonymous street, in the neighborhood of San Bartolome, but belonging to San Miguel. The exact date of its foundation is unknown, believing that existed in the fifteenth century. At the founding of the Convent of Grace was the Hospital of S. Bartholome, who may be known in the nineteenth century as Sojourners; I call it the S. Bartholome might be to distinguish it from San Miguel, which may exist at that time.
