Sobre la polisemia de "elegantia": de Plauto a Frontón

Abstract

Pese a estar presente en la prosa latina de todos los tiempos, el concepto de elegantia no ha merecido la atención debida, posiblemente por la dificultad análitica que implica el operar de manera simultánea en muchos campos semánticos. Mediante la combinación de los métodos etimológico, opositivo-sincrónico y diacrónico establecemos el significado del término y su funcionamiento en la lengua latina desde Plauto hasta Frontón como fundamento de su incorporación al lenguaje retórico y gramatical que lo hará pervivir hasta nuestros días.

Despite its pervasiveness in the Latin prose, the concept of «elegantia» has not deserved the necessary attention, presumably owing to the analytic difficulty involved in the simultaneous activation of several semantic fields. Through a combination of methods etymological, synchronic-comparative and diachronic, we shed light on the meaning of the term as well as its function in Latin from Plauto to Fronto as the foundations of the rhetorical and grammatical languages which have survived until the present day.
