Asociado a la retórica y especialmente a la "elocutio", el concepto de "concinnitas" cuando llega a Cicerón recoge un significado tradición mucho más amplio que el que se conserva entonces, sobre todo, en los escritores aficionados a los arcaísmos del 2º. siglo a. C. El origen del significado surge del lenguaje culinario, del que pasa a otros campos ("compositio", "elocutio", clase distributiva, transferencias).
