Estudio antropológico del comportamiento ante la muerte: humanidad e inhumanidad

Abstract

La conducta de un homínido ante la muerte, la de cualquier animal, es de indiferencia. Sólo si la muerte cursa con dolor y sufrimiento notaremos ese dolor y ese sufrimiento, pero lo que no notaremos es la sensación de finitud e impotencia ante lo irremediable. El hombre, “Homo sapiens”, por el contrario, sabe que va a morir, que todo acaba irremediablemente algún día, y eso le provoca una angustia y un sufrimiento añadido que le hace reaccionar. Podemos seguir en el registro fósil estas reacciones desde antiguo, pero también observamos la presencia de muerte provocada a los semejantes a sabiendas de su finitud, e incluso, a veces, la institucionalización de una verdadera cultura de la muerte. El presente artículo trata de estas situaciones, de la actitud del hombre ante la muerte, tan necesarias de recordar en el mundo actual.

The behaviour of a hominid faced with the death, whom of any animal, is indifference. Only if the death deals with pain and suffering we will notice this pain and this suffering, but what we will not notice is the sensation of feebleness and impotence faced with the irremediable thing. The man, “Homo sapiens”, on the contrary, knows that he is going to die, that everything ends irremediably some day, and it leads him to a distress and an added suffering that makes him react. We can follow up these reactions in the fossil record from ancient times, but we also notice the presence of death caused to his fellow men knowing full well their finite existence, and even, sometimes, the institutionalization of a real culture of death. This article deals with these situations, with the attitude of man faced with death, which are so necessary to remind in the contemporary world.
