La visión de los europeos sobre la lengua japonesa en los siglos XVI y XVII

Abstract

Para los jesuitas que fueron a evangelizar la tierra nipona en los siglos XVI y XVII, era indispensable el conocimiento de la lengua japonesa. Desde la primera etapa, los jesuitas y otros europeos intentaron aprender el idioma para comunicarse con los japoneses encontrándose con muchas dificultades. No cabe duda que el conocimiento del japonés era un instrumento muy importante para profundizar en las relaciones entre los europeos y los japoneses. En este artículo quisiera analizar las percepciones sobre Japón y el conocimiento que los jesuítas y otros europeos tenían sobre el idioma japonés.

For the Jesuits who went to evangelize Japan in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries, an understanding of the Japanese language was indispensable. From the beginning, the Jesuits and other Europeans were trying to master the language to communicate with the Japanese although this entailed many difficulties. Without a doubt a Knowledge of the Japanese language was an important tool to deepen the ties between the Europeans and the Japanese. In this article I would like to analyze how the Jesuits and other Europeans perceived Japan and their knowledge of the Japanese language.
