The pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) finds in Northern Extremadura its southern limit of world distribution, where it is a rare species, listed as a sensitive species to habitat degradation. The increasing aridity of Mediterranean climate and the frequent genetic introgression with Quercus pyrenaica are factors that could compromise the viability of these relict populations of Quercus robur. The objective of this project is to assess the adaptive advantages of hybridization with Q. pyrenaica to cope with the increasing water shortage in Q. robur populations. Specifically we study the effects of water stress on functional traits and survival of Quercus robur seedlings, and how these responses vary with the level of hybridization. To this end, it has conducted an experimental greenhouse trial with 1440 Quercus robur seedlings, from 60 parental trees of different level of hybridization located in six relict populations of northern Extremadura. Seedlings were growth for three years split in 15 block, under three different watering regimes (High, Medium and Low; 5 blocks per level of irrigation). During this period various physiological traits of the seedlings were measured and after the trial several morphological and anatomical features were measured. Seedling survival was recorded every six month. The results show that both functional traits (morphological, physiological and anatomical) and seedlings survival were adversely affected by water limitation. Moreover, it was verified that some functional traits of seedlings differed with the level of hybridization of the parental tree. However, we did not find any adaptive advantage for hybridization with Q. pyrenaica to cope with water stress, as no significant interactions between the level of hybridization and water availability for different functional traits and seedlings survival were found.
