En él se condensan las características fundamentales del trastorno, causas, sus posibles antecedentes históricos, el diagnóstico diferencial, estudio epidemiológico y otros aspectos. Asímismo, se esclarecen algunos tópicos que han marcado a lo largo de muchos años la comprensión de la enfermedad. Por último, se pone especial atención en los aspectos comunicativos de los que lo padecen, intentando comprender cómo funciona la mente de un niño autista y cuál es su evolución lingüística.
