During the First World War, Spanish press suffered the same division between pro-allies and pro-Germans that affected a large part of Spanish society. New newspapers even emerged, funded by warring countries. That seems to be the origin of Renovación Española, a pro-German illustrated magazine. The Asturian artist Sócrates Quintana is among the cartoonists who worked for the magazine. His cartoons, signed with a pseudonym, look at various aspects of the Great War and national current affairs. This paper will study the context, style and influences of that works. |
