One of the themes that characterize the literature of the twentieth century is the descent into the depths of the psyche: psychological insight, split personality, research ego (Innerself). My thesis will focus in particular on the Canadian author Margaret Laurence that in her novels examines four female characters. Leading idea of my research will be a common need to all the heroines of Margaret Laurence: exploration and reinvention of the past for the recovery of their roots in the existential level. The protagonists of the novels are different tormented creatures, sometimes desperately searching for an identity. The aim of my thesis is to demonstrate that all of them want to live their own individuality while recognizing heir of his past and part of a larger "historical continuum" that goes beyond the individual life. The main characters all belong to the reality of Manawaka, small town created by the imagination of the author that is the place of reconciliation of opposites, life and death, and the saga of cycles. I will try to show that in the Laurence's issue constant appears the conflict of thinking spirit divided between being and want to be, between the place of birth and place of choice; the profile of the self is always split, divided. Along the lines of proposed analysis, it turns out that the characters of Laurence are far from being heroes or anti-heroes; they are nothing more than people relegated to the margins of society and poorly considered. They are not presented as fascinating creatures. The author does not want them to be liked or loved at all costs by readers. In fact, ironically, the author highlights our tendency to dislike them also involving some other characters that marginalize or remove them. This is a peculiar feature of Margaret Laurence, who is thus able to change our perspective, showing what, in terms of human values, constitutes the environment in which we live. The relationship that all four heroines of Laurence have with the environment that surrounds them is special: we understand that they do not feel comfortable, but at the same time from that they draw strength and courage to fight their problems. I will try to show how the writings of M. Laurence revolve around two key points, the individual and his dilemmas, and that crucial goal for the author, at the base of his literary creed, is always to grasp the truth of the characters he describes . Laurence has often stated that her heroines are well-defined in his imagination, and that the challenge is then to be able to listen to their voice and play it in writing. The dilemmas of his characters recall problems common to other characters of the literary scene: the role of women in patriarchal societies, the conflict between the dictates of society and their desires, the need to stand out and at the same time hide themselves and find security within of a community, the constant struggle to find an identity.
