Abstract

At the moment gypsies in Spain are in a situation of legal equality and real inequality, because to be a gypsy in Spain continues to be a great drawback and a disadvantage in the race to secure socially established prizes. Spanish gypsies continue to have the highest levels of illiteracy and scholastic absenteeism, they suffer high levels of unemployment and lack of secure jobs, they carry out occupations without qualification or social recognition, have houses of bad quality and are accompanied, in a persistent way, by negative social stigma and social marginalization.
