The main purpose of the research project, that supports this article, is to find out if the concrete work with manipulative material (Dienes Blocks), involving the basic characteristics and practices of shape, size and colour, contributes to the development of the cognitive structures associated with these basic concepts. The investigation work was carried out with intellectually disabled people. A research methodology based on a survey technique was used. The data collection instruments were the direct observation of work in the classroom, identification of previous knowledge, the ordering of cards (Card Sorting), consultation and representation of conceptual networks through the MICROGOLUCA program. The representation and the analysis of the concepts were performed by using the “Pathfinder Associative Networks” technique according to the “Theory of Nuclear Concepts”. Among the most relevant results we can highlight the need of teachers to the access of resources in order to determine the most significant concepts from which students structure their knowledge and, depending on the obtained results, plan and develop learning situations or design and use supporting materials to help strengthen and consolidate this knowledge.es_ES
