Ediciones y traducciones al español de “Adolphe”, de Benjamin Constant

Abstract

La repercusión y posterioridad del relato de Constant, Adolphe, en el panorama editorial durante los siglos XIX Y XX son constatables tanto a través de las múltiples reediciones y estudios críticos que vieron la luz en Francia y en el extranjero, como por la profusión de traducciones publicadas en lenguas tan diversas como el inglés, alemán, húngaro, danés, rumano o chino. En nuestro trabajo realizamos un recorrido por las ediciones y traducciones al español de este relato con el objetivo de evidenciar su éxito editorial nacional e internacional. Asimismo, el análisis de la traducción al español de P. Vidal (1845), que pone de manifiesto el método y las técnicas de traducción de esta versión, nos permite reflexionar sobre la calidad de las traducciones publicadas en este periodo histórico.

The impact of Benjamin Constant’s novel Adolphe on the publishing industry of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is clearly evidenced by the myriad re-printed editions and surplus of literary critical studies that appeared in France and far beyond the country borders. There is also a wealth of published translations into different languages, such as English, German, Hungarian, Danish, Romanian or Chinese that account for the immeasurable influence of Adolphe. In the present paper, we will firstly study several Spanish editions and translations of Constant’s novel with a view to illustrating its enormous success in France and abroad. Secondly, we will analyze P. Vidal’s version into Spanish (1845), displaying the translator’s own translational method and techniques. Lastly, we will attempt to weigh the quality of Spanish translations that found their way into print in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
