With regard to the origins of football in Spain there is still a great deal to be explained and one of the aspects concerns the sport began to be played, how it was played and how the players trained. It is this last question which is dealt with in this article whose aim is to identify the first methods or techniques for football training; in other words what physical preparation did players and teams undertake at the beginning of the last century (1899-1930). We set out with a review of the primary sources and a consultation of other more recent bibliographical sources which allow us to present a positivist discourse contextualised in the social-sports arena of the time. We find out that natural athletic exercises (weight-lifting, fights, jumps, throwing and races) and the Swedish gymnastic methods were the most commonly used. This unprecedented study helps to perceive the first phase in the evolution of training for this popular sport.
