This article is a meditation on Jacques Bouveresse’s book on literature and moral philosophy (“La connaissance de l’écrivain. Its introductory section situates Bouveresse in the context of contemporary philosophy, giving pride of place to his mentor Jules Vuilemin and to the philosophical implications of Paul Valéry. The second part of the article explores Bouveresses’s three fundamental concerns regarding the relations between literature and philosophy: 1) whether literature can contribute to moral philosophy, 2) whether it can do so with literary means, and 3) whether these means produce a knowledge that cannot be reached through other means. Bouveresse answers in the affirmative to the first two questions, but is uncertain about the third.
