La conciencia colectiva española frente a las guerras coloniales del norte de Marruecos (1909-1921)

Abstract

El presente estudio pretende estudiar a la conciencia colectiva española frente a las guerras coloniales de Marruecos de 1909, 1911, 1921 y 1924. Se trata de analizar a fondo la peculiaridad de dicha conciencia y las razones por las que su respectiva conducta fuese dicótoma y contradictoria ante las escenas bélicas que entonces se libraban al otro lado del Estrecho. Para ello hemos examinado las actitudes de sus dos diferentes componentes: uno institucional, formado por el Ejército y la Iglesia; y otro, extrainstitucional representado por la opinión pública y los ciudadanos de a pie. En el mismo estudio, se aprecia, también, la parte tácita de la reacción social española ante los hechos bélicos de Marruecos a través de un exhaustivo análisis de las fuentes historiográficas de primera mano, del imaginario colectivo y de la memoria histórica.

This paper aims to study Spain’s collective consciousness about the colonial wars in Morocco of 1909, 1911, 1921 and 1924. Its goal is to provide an in-depth analysis of the singularity of such consciousness and the reasons why it showed a dichotomous and contradictory expression with regard to the war episodes then occurring on the other side of the Strait of Gibraltar. For this purpose, we have examined its two main components: on the one hand, an institutional one composed of the army and the Catholic church and, on the other hand, a non-institutional one which included the media and the common people. Our study also deals with the unspoken dimension of the reaction of Spanish society to the war events in Morocco through an exhaustive analysis of first-hand historical sources, collective imagination and historical memory.
