Lengua y escritura chinas en el siglo XVII: las aportaciones del dominico Fernández de Navarrete

Abstract

A principios del siglo XVII, el imperio chino quedó abierto a las órdenes mendicantes gracias a una bula papal que puso fin al monopolio que hasta entonces habían tenido los jesuitas. A partir de entonces, los franciscanos y dominicos, y algunos años después los agustinos, empezaron a entrar en China para predicar y evangelizar allí. Los dominicos adoptaron como método de predicación la instalación permanente de los religiosos en los lugares de evangelización y defendieron el aprendizaje de la lengua de aquellos a los que iban a evangelizar. Por ello, en los libros que escribieron acerca de China incluyeron nociones acera de la lengua y la escritura chinas. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las informaciones sobre la lengua y la escritura chinas incluidas en una de las obras más importantes sobre China del siglo XVII, los Tratados históricos, políticos, éticos y religiosos de la monarquía de China, del dominico Domingo Fernández de Navarrete.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the Chinese empire was open to mendicant orders thanks to a Papal bull that ended the monopoly that until then had had the Jesuits. From then on, the Franciscans and Dominicans, and some years later the Augustinians, began to enter China to preach and evangelize there. The preaching method of the Dominicans was the permanent settlement of the religious in the places of evangelization and they defended the learning of the language of those to whom they were to evangelize. Thus, in the books they wrote about China they included notions of the Chinese language and writing. The aim of this article is to analyze the information about the Chinese language and writing included in one of the most important works on China in the 17th century, the Tratados históricos, políticos, éticos y religiosos de la monarquía de China by the Dominican Domingo Fernández Of Navarrete.
