El retablo mayor de Villa del Rey (Cáceres), sus autores (el escultor Pedro de Paz y el pintor Gaspar Gallego) y unas inéditas pinturas murales

Abstract

Se documenta un retablo del escultor de Alcántara Pedro de Paz, complementado con las pinturas de Gaspar Gallego, dos artistas que trabajaron en el norte de Extremadura en los años finales del siglo XVI e iniciales del XVII. Todo ello ha sido posible gracias al hallazgo de varios epígrafes localizados con motivo de la reciente restauración de la pieza. También se analizan las inéditas pinturas murales que han aparecido detrás del retablo, datadas en el año 1566 y que atribuimos al pintor Juan de Ribera.

An altarpiece of the sculptor of Alcántara Pedro de Paz, complemented with paintings of Gaspar Gallego, two artists who worked in the North of Extremadura in the late 16th century and early 17th, is documented. All this has been possible thanks to the discovery of several epigraphs located on the occasion of the recent restoration of the piece. Also there are analyzed the mural paintings that have appeared behind the altarpiece, dated in the year 1566 and that we attribute to the painter Juan de Ribera.
