El martirio y el triunfo de los jesuitas en Nagasaki: la iconografía y sus fuentes en los colegios jesuíticos del País Vasco y Navarra

Abstract

Los tres mártires jesuitas de Nagasaki, Pablo Miki, Diego Kisai y Juan de Gotó, adquirieron una gran relevancia en la Compañía de Jesús, antes incluso de su beatificación en 1627. Su presencia a través de diversos tipos de obras de arte proliferó en los distintos domicilios de la orden. A este respecto resultaron fundamentales las fuentes hagiográficas que relataban su martirio, pues fueron estas las que definieron la iconografía, que se centraba en la escena del tormento propiamente dicho y en las imágenes triunfales de gloria. En este artículo analizaremos las cuatro representaciones de este tipo que se conservan en los antiguos colegios jesuíticos del País Vasco y de Navarra.

The three Jesuit martyrs of Nagasaki, Paulo Miki, James Kisai and Juan Soan de Goto, acquired great relevance in the Society of Jesus, even before their beatification in 1627. Their presence through several kinds of artworks proliferated in different residences of the order. According to this, there were fundamental the hagiographical sources that narrated their martyrdom, for these defined the iconography, which focused on the scene of torment itself and on the triumphal images of glory. In this article, we will analyse the four representations of this type preserved in the old Jesuit colleges in the Basque Country and Navarre.
