The observations of solar activity in the past are essential for understanding the mechanisms that govern the phenomena taking place on the Sun. Beside, the development of models that allow us to predict the behavior in the future are very important, as the activity of our star significantly influences on many aspects of life on our planet. The solar activity index that has been studied for a longer time is the sunspot number, so it is a good indicator of the long-term behavior of the Sun. Since the invention of the telescope, observations and counts of this phenomena have been made in an increasingly systematic way. These observations have led to the development the sunspots number and group of sunspots number serie, which span the period between the time and the present. The aim of this work is to provide data and tools that help to complete these series and to define with precision the solar activity in the past. The results of the analysis of solar drawings corresponding to different periods are showed. Drawings from The Royal Astronomical Observatory of The Spanish Navy in 1884, and drawings made by Hevelius previus to the Maunder minimum period are analyzed. As well, this work shows methods and instruments that allow to find the positions and areas of the spots easily, accurately and quickly. The Carrington method to calculate the heliographic coordinates of sunspots is revisited, and also a new software to analyze solar images is developed.
