Title: Estrategias de justificación y negación del daño en agresores condenados por violencia de género: dimensiones cognitivas y sociales

Abstract: Con el propósito de ampliar el conocimiento sobre las variables que influyen en el inicio y mantenimiento de la violencia de género, la presente Tesis Doctoral pretende: a) analizar la atribución de responsabilidad de los condenados por violencia de género, así como la presencia de actitudes sexistas, pensamientos distorsionados hacia la mujer y la violencia, el apoyo social percibido y la autoestima, como variables mediadoras para la justificación y negación de la violencia ejercida sobre la pareja; y b) comprobar la influencia de estas variables en la asunción de responsabilidad del agresor de género. Los participantes en la investigación fueron 129 hombres que estaban cumpliendo condenas privativas de libertad por delitos relacionados con la violencia de género. Los instrumentos aplicados fueron complementados con una entrevista semiestructurada individualizada y el análisis de los expedientes penitenciarios. Los resultados, presentados en forma de cinco artículos, permiten constatar que un porcentaje elevado de agresores tiende a asumir la responsabilidad por la violencia ejercida y no justifica la agresión, aunque en mayor medida culpabiliza a la víctima. Asimismo, los estudios concluyen que las actitudes sexistas se relacionan con una mayor tendencia a minimizar el daño. Por último, constatamos que los agresores con puntuaciones elevadas en autoestima utilizan en menor medida la defensa propia como estrategia para justificar la violencia, y la presencia de una red de apoyo social adecuada aumenta la atribución de responsabilidad por parte del condenado por violencia de género.
Taking into account the purpose of increasing the knowledge about variables that have influence in the origin and preservation of violence against partner, the line of research that form this Doctoral Thesis expects: a) analyze the attribution of responsibility in convicted for gender-based violence as well as sexist attitudes, distorted thoughts about women and use of violence, perceived functional social support and self-esteem as measure variables to justify and negation of violence over the partner; b) verify the influence of these variables in the assumption of responsibility in the gender-based violence aggressor. In view of the above, the participants in the research were 129 men who were carry out sentences for crimes related with gender-based violence. The instruments applied were accomplished with a personal interview and the penitentiary files. The results, presented by five articles, allow for confirm that a high percentage of aggressors tend to assume the responsibility for the violence applied and they do not tend to justify the aggression, although most of them tend to blame the victim. In the same way, sexist attitudes are related with a high tend to minimize the harm done in the aggression. Last, we confirm that aggressors with high levels of selfesteem tend to use in a low level the self-defence as strategy to justify the violence, and if they have a proper social support exist a high level of attribution of responsibility in aggressors convicted by gender-based violence.
