La Misa de San Gregorio: aclaraciones sobre un tema iconográfico. Un ejemplo en Pisón de Castrejón (Palencia)

Abstract

El propósito de este artículo es aclarar y precisar, en la medida de lo posible, el alcance y significado de la representación de un tema tan interesante como la Misa de San Gregorio, para lo cual, además de apuntar algunos aspectos sobre su origen, gran difusión y declive, estudiaremos una de sus manifestaciones más sobresalientes: el relieve gótico pétreo de la sacristía de la iglesia de Pisón de Castrejón (Palencia). Centrándonos en el aspecto iconográfico, analizaremos el relieve insertándolo en un conjunto más amplio del que forma parte, intentando comprender de este modo toda la riqueza que encierra una imagen de devoción de estas características. A pesar de ser la Misa de San Gregorio uno de los temas más representativos del arte religioso de los siglos XV y XVI en gran parte de Europa, los estudios que se le han dedicado son muy escasos debido sin duda a la ausencia de fuentes de la época que fijen su significado e iconografía.

The aim of this article is to clarify, as far as possible, the scope and meaning of the representation of a topic as interesting as the Mass of Saint Gregory, for which, in addition to pointing out some aspects about its origin, diffusion and decline, we will study one of its most outstanding manifestations: the gothic stone relief in the sacristy of the church of Pisón de Castrejón (Palencia). Focusing on the iconographic aspect, we will analyze the relief inserting it into a wider group of which it is a part, trying to understand in this way all the richness that contains an image of devotion of these characteristics. Despite being the Mass of Saint Gregory one of the most representative religious art of the XVth and XVIth centuries in much of Europe, the studies that have been devoted to it are very scarce, due to the absence of sources of era that fix their meaning and iconography.
