Escultura pública y decoración mural del siglo XX en Almendralejo (Badajoz)

Abstract

En el presente artículo se analiza la obra escultórica y pictórica que podemos encontrar en Almendralejo, ciudad de gran riqueza y una fuerte pujanza económica, mantenida a lo largo del siglo XX, gracias sobre todo al sector agrícola, especializado en el cultivo de la vid, el olivo y el cereal, y complementado por industrias de transformación de diversa entidad. El crecimiento demográfico es significativo, produciéndose un considerable aumento a lo largo de la primera mitad del citado siglo (de 12.587 habitantes en 1900 a 21.394 en 1950), para mantenerse posteriormente en un nivel de crecimiento estable y moderado. En este marco, las iniciativas de carácter urbanístico, arquitectónico y artístico han tenido un notable desarrollo. Destacan, entre la obra escultórica, los monumentos a José de Espronceda y a Carolina Coronado. De la pintura y decoración mural, destacan el teatro Carolina Coronado, la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Purificación y otras obras ubicadas en dos cafeterías.

In this paper we analyze the sculptural and pictorial work that we can find in Almendralejo, a town of great wealth and a strong economic strength, maintained throughout the 20th century, thanks above all to the agricultural sector, specialized in the cultivation of the vine, the olive tree and the cereal, and complemented by transformation industries of diverse entity. The demographic growth is significant, producing a considerable increase throughout the first half of the mentioned century (from 12,587 inhabitants in 1900 to 21,394 in 1950), to subsequently maintain a stable and moderate level of growth. In this framework, urban, architectural and artistic initiatives have had a remarkable development. Highlights, among the sculptural work, the monuments to José de Espronceda and Carolina Coronado. Among the mural painting and decoration, the Carolina Coronado theater, the church of Our Lady of Purification and other works located in two cafes.
