Crecimiento demográfico y extensión de cultivos en Coria y su tierra durante el siglo XVI

Abstract

El crecimiento de la población castellana durante el siglo XVI ha sido constatado por todos los historiadores que se han ocupado del tema. Sin embargo, establecer el reparto de este crecimiento entre el mundo urbano y el rural es una tarea que dista mucho de haber finalizado. De cualquier modo, creemos que queda claramente establecido que la población de la tierra de Coria experimentó entre 1530 y 1591 un importante crecimiento, y que éste no se debió sólo al “tirón” de la ciudad de Coria, sino que, a un ritmo mucho más moderado, también contribuyeron los núcleos rurales.

The growth of the Castilian population during the 16nth century has been verified by all historians who have dealt with the subject. However, establishing the distribution of this growth between the urban and the rural world is a task that is far from being completed. In any case, we believe that it is clearly established that the population of the land of Coria experienced an important growth between 1530 and 1591, and that this was not only due to the "pull" of the city of Coria, but at a much more moderate, rural villages also contributed.
