Vizcaínos, trasmeranos y otros artistas norteños en la Extremadura del siglo XVI

Abstract

El objetivo de este estudio es catalogar los artífices norteños que a lo largo del siglo XVI desarrollaron sus tareas por la geografía extremeña. La abundancia de investigaciones sobre el siglo XVI español en los últimos años, profundizando en la búsqueda documental en los archivos parroquiales, notariales y judiciales, ha proporcionado numerosas referencias inéditas y, sobre todo, ha ampliado enormemente la nómina de estos artífices. De algunos hay referencias explícitas de su lugar de origen; de otros, entendiendo su apellido como toponímico, sólo hay suposiciones; varios son hijos o nietos, en algunos casos nacidos ya en Extremadura, de inmigrantes. A veces los encontramos en cuadrillas; en ocasiones, dispersos. Gozan unos de prestigio y de elevada posición, como maestros mayores, tracistas, tasadores, mientras la mayoría son picapedreros o asentadores, buenos conocedores de la labra de la piedra. Las razones de estos movimientos pudieron ser varias: búsqueda de sustento por los segundos hijos, replanteamientos urbanos y domésticos en las ciudades, la expulsión de minorías étnicas y religiosas que impulsaron la migración de profesionales, etc.

The objective of this study is to catalog the northern craftsmen who throughout the 16th century developed their tasks by the geography of Extremadura. The abundance of research on the Spanish 16th century in recent years, deepening the search for documents in the parish, notarial and court archives, has provided numerous unpublished references and, above all, has greatly expanded the list of these architects. Of some there are explicit references of their place of origin; of others, understanding their surname as toponymic, there are only assumptions; several are children or grandchildren, in some cases born in Extremadura, of immigrants. Sometimes we find them in gangs; sometimes, scattered. They enjoy some of prestige and high position, as elder teachers, tracists, appraisers, while most are stonemasons or settlers, good experts of stone working. The reasons for these movements could be several: search for sustenance by the second children, urban and domestic rethinking in the cities, the expulsion of ethnic and religious minorities that drove the migration of professionals, etc.
