Problemas de la traducción poética: Juan Ramón Jiménez en inglés

Abstract

En el presente artículo trataré de los problemas con los que se ha de enfrentar el traductor ante la versión de un poema en una lengua gramaticalmente alejada del texto original. Para el desarrollo de la tesis que se pretende plantear se procede a enunciar brevemente el estado de la cuestión respecto a los estudios de la teoría y la práctica de la traducción, desde una perspectiva tradicional hasta llegar a los planteamientos más recientes. Se trata de un mínimo recurso de apoyo a lo que intentaré demostrar y que constituye la posible originalidad de mi trabajo. Éste consistirá en cotejar algunos textos traducidos al inglés del Nobel español, Juan Ramón Jiménez, para descubrir la inexorable pérdida que el texto sufre en su versión a otro sistema lingüístico y, lo que es más importante, poder intuir si el sentimiento que el texto traducido despierta en el lector anglófono es semejante o no al que despierta el texto original en el lector hispanohablante.

This paper deals with the problems a translator must face when he is dealing with a poem written in a language very different from his own. For that purpose, I shall offer a brief survey of the evolution the translation theory has gone throughout the years. That will only be used as the support for what is the real aim I am pursuing: the comparison of some of Juan Ramón Jiménez’s poems translated into English with the aim, not to criticise whether those versions are faithful, good and so forth (needless to say that I previously chose what I consider very accurate versions), but to find out the inexorable loss of any translation and, what is more important, whether the feeling arising in the English-speaking reader is similar or different from the sentiment of a Spanish-speaking lover of Juan Ramón Jiménez’s poetry.
