Within the literary production of black Africans, which presents two essentially modalities, oral and written, two moments are usually considered. The first precedes the colonial period, and is characterized by the predominance or exclusivity of the oral modality. The products of this phase can be collected within the so-called African traditional literature, although it would be more appropriate to speak of tribal, isolated, monolingual literatures and destined to the self-consumption of each ethnic group.
