Formación y desarrollo del tópico del "carpe diem" en la literatura grecolatina

Abstract

El “carpe diem” consiste en la invitación a aprovechar el momento y disfrutar de la vida, sin preocuparse por el futuro, mientras es posible. Este trabajo intenta profundizar en el desarrollo y la formación de este tópico a lo largo de la historia de la literatura grecolatina, definiendo, finalmente, los elementos que lo conforman. Para ello, haremos un recorrido por las literaturas sumeria, egipcia y bíblica, que forman los antecedentes del “carpe diem”, pasando por su desarrollo a lo largo de la literatura griega (analizando las ejemplos tomados de las obras de los líricos, algunos casos destacados de prosa y los epigramistas de la “Antología Palatina”), hasta llegar a su completa formulación en la literatura latina, deteniéndonos especialmente en la poesía amorosa (con Catulo, Tibulo, Propercio y Ovidio) y Horacio y Marcial.

The “carpe diem” topos is an invitation to embrace the now and enjoy life, without worrying for the future, as long as it’s possible. This paper tries to deepen in the development and formation of this topos during Greco-Latin literature’s history, defining, finally, the elements that shape it. In order to achieve this, we will explore the Sumerian, Egyptian and Biblical literatures, which form the antecedents of the “carpe diem” topos, going through its development throughout Greek literature (analysing the examples taken from the works of the lyricists, some outstanding cases of prose and the epigramists of the Palatine Anthology), until we reach its complete formulation in Latin literature, looking especially at love poetry (with Catullus, Tibulus, Propercio and Ovid) and Horacio and Marcial.
