Cáceres y su partido en el siglo XVIII. Un intento de análisis demográfico comparado

Abstract

El panorama de la población extremeña del siglo XVIII es progresivamente mejor conocido tanto en sus variables vitales como en la relación entre éstas y el resto de los factores sociales y económicos. Sin poder decir lo mismo de las centurias pasadas ni aun de las posteriores, el siglo XVIII ha suscitado la atención de varios investigadores cuyos trabajos —algunos de ellos pioneros en el contexto de la historiografía española sobre la población— han alumbrado un paisaje enormemente rico en matices. A la visión simplista de un siglo XVIII presidido por el crecimiento global, se sumaron desde finales de los ochenta, apreciaciones que en buena medida pusieron límites a ese crecimiento, pocas veces lineal cuando no invertido por numerosas dificultades. Una de las zonas donde ese crecimiento fue más intensamente contrastado la compone el antiguo partido de Cáceres, compuesto en el siglo XVIII por dieciséis núcleos de diversa naturaleza jurisdiccional.

The panorama of the population from Extremadura in the 18th century is progressively better known both in its vital variables and in the relationship between these and the rest of the social and economic factors. Without being able to say the same of the past centuries or even of the later ones, the 18th century has attracted the attention of several researchers whose works —some of them pioneers in the context of Spanish historiography on the population— have illuminated a landscape enormously rich in nuances. The simplistic vision of an 18th century, dominated by global growth, added since the late eighties, appreciations that largely limited that growth, rarely lineal when not invested by numerous difficulties. One of the areas where this growth was more intensely contrasted is the old district of Cáceres, composed in the 18th century by sixteen towns of different jurisdictional nature.
