After the crisis and disappearance of the communist regimes of Eastern Europe, many predicted that the Chinese communist regime was irreversibly engaged in a deep crisis, of which the Tiananmen crisis had been a first act. However, the subsequent evolution of China has been characterized by its stability, and the political regime appeared solidly based on the post-Tiananmen pact between what has been called reformist and conservative groups in power.
