Los "Emblemas morales" de Juan de Horozco

Abstract

Los “Emblemas morales” de Juan de Horozco son el resultado de una época presidida principalmente por la crisis que pesa sobre el hombre desde finales del siglo XVI hasta la primera mitad del siglo XVII. Se trata, en el fondo, de sermones cargados de erudición al servicio de unos fines que, como sacerdote, tenía con respecto a la salvación de las almas. Las imágenes que nos proporcionan se repetirán una y otra vez, hasta dar lugar a tópicos. Se recogen normas de moralidad, consejos y advertencias, señalando donde está el bien y el mal de forma machacona y reiterativa. Por este camino, mezcla de pesimismo y melancolía frente al mundo, por un lado, y por otro, de sentimientos miserables procedentes de una naturaleza depravada, se llega a la exaltación del interés por la muerte. Este interés es en el siglo XVII una experiencia convulsiva, dramática y desesperante, que no tiene la visión teológica y didáctica que tuvo en la Edad Media. La muerte en el Renacimiento, y sobre todo en el Barroco, se ve como la suma de todos los males y el final trágico y terrible del hombre.

The "Moral emblems" of Juan de Horozco are the result of an era presided over mainly by the crisis that weighs on man from the end of the 16th century until the first half of the 17th century. It is, at heart, full of erudition sermons in the service of some purposes that, as a priest, had with respect to the salvation of souls. The images that they provide will be repeated again and again, until they give rise to topics. Standards of morality, advice and warnings are collected, pointing out where good and evil are in a repetitive manner. Along this path, a mixture of pessimism and melancholy in front of the world, on the one hand, and on the other, of miserable feelings coming from a depraved nature, one reaches the exaltation of interest in death. This interest is in the 17th century a convulsive, dramatic and desperate experience, which does not have the theological and didactic vision it had in the Middle Ages. Death in the Renaissance, and especially in the Baroque, is seen as the sum of all evils and the tragic and terrible end of man.
