In the past, the figure of the librarian, was consolidated as a position of international prestige in the classical world, however; later on, this figure, for some time has suffered socially from a significant lack of recognition unlike other professionals such as doctors, architects, lawyers, etc. that on the contrary, have enjoyed and enjoy great social prestige. At present, and after the incursion of New Technologies (NTI) in libraries, the profile of the librarian has increased his social prestige thanks to new tasks that have been entrusted to him and which have helped this professional in the face of society not to be placed in the proper technical tasks as they are: the cataloging, the classification and the book-loan service. Although the figure has been acquiring in recent times a greater role in society, continue weighing some issues to achieve the prestige that this professional figure deserves. The present survey analyzes the difficulties related to the prestige and social recognition faced by the figure of the librarian. For this, a historical journey is made since the origins of the profession. We analyze the studies of Library and Information Science in Spain as well as the labor insertion in these professionals. It addresses the different stereotypes that have arisen around the librarian and the social prejudices that have damaged his social prestige. The low associationism and the almost nonexistent number of professional association or the marked complex of inferiority of the Librarian, has led to the ignorance of the figure who struggles to reappear through the figure of Librarian 3.0.
