This article offers a critical survey of two minor medieval historiographical
genres in the Iberian Peninsula: regnal lists and annals. Covering the various traditions
within Iberia, it aims to reconstruct their evolution and meaning. For the regnal lists, it tries
to identify the different redactions and to establish the relationship among the extant
manuscripts, exploring its influence and its uses in Oviedo, Leon, Najera, Compostela and
Cataluna. The study of annals includes as well all the Iberian traditions, and brings new data
and perspectives for rethinking their evolution and contexts. Some concluding remarks are
intended to connect this research with the general development of the writing of history in
medieval Spain.

This paper deals with the harangue used in a naval context, as presented in 16th
-century Portuguese overseas historical writing. The first part of the article analyses the way
in which such speeches can be integrated – by means of settings – in the narrative
discourse. The second part identifies in the harangues different rhetorical “topoi” and their
functions. In short, the intention of this work is to characterize the standard harangue used
by captains and Portuguese governors before a naval battle in the Indian Ocean.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the evolution of pre-battle speeches
addressed to different groups or nations, according to the group character or nature. We
will see that the pre-battle speech shows a series of characteristics of form, structure and
content that were well defined since Thucydides, and that were repeated, in more or less
the same manner, in all the examples found along the Greek and Roman historiographical
tradition. In the preliminaries of the battle of Issus described by Trogus and Curtius, the
speech addressed to different nations turns out to be an “epipólesis” and, Alexander the Great
being its protagonist, it shows a great degree of complexity. We are thus led to search its
origin and first model in the “epipoléseis” included in the “Iliad”, with a special mention of the
important “epipólesis” of Agamemnon in Book IV. We also want to emphasize the undeniable
influence of rhetoric in the composition of the battle descriptions in which such speeches
were included.

Justin’s “Epitome” records some speeches that Trogus had included in the
“Historiae Philippicae”. Justin abridges and modifies a great deal of these passages, which
appear in most cases in “oratio oblique”, following an option that he attributes to Trogus.
Justin’s manipulation of the text makes these discourses very problematic to study:
sometimes they are extremely shortened, or they completely lack any kind of settings, or
they are moved from their original place, or they may even appear in direct style.
